Lent is a penitential season that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends Holy Saturday Eve. It is 40 days (minus Sundays) and is a time to fast and pray as Jesus did in His 40 days in the wilderness. It is a time to repent of our sins, add new godly disciplines and increase our giving to the poor. We do this last part by filling mite boxes with money saved from our fasting. For example if I choose to fast from my daily Dunkin Donuts coffee then I would add that saved money to my mite box that will be offered to the Lord on Easter.

It is also a tradition to highlight the penitential nature of the season by burying the “Alleluias,” reducing the amount of music, and praying the Great Litany on the first Sunday in Lent.
